President Bush just spoke at the Department of Defense this morning, marking five years since the beginning of the Iraq war. He thanked the troops and summed up the mission thusfar saying, "because we acted the world is better and the United States is safer."
President Bush spoke around recent official reports that show no link between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein saying that the reduction in violence in Iraq and the alliance of some local groups with American forces is “the first large-scale Arab uprising against Osama bin Laden, his grim ideology, and his terror network.” He remained firm and optimistic in the mission saying, “by spreading the hope of liberty in the Middle East, we will help free societies to take root — and when they do, freedom will yield the peace we all desire.”

The speech happens amid protests, like the one above held yesterday in Washington DC. Reports out today also show that 71 percent of Americans think that the Iraq war is hurting the economy. President Bush responded to this saying today acknowledging the high cost of the war in "lives and treasure." To see his response, read more.
He rebutted saying that without those expenditures Iraq would devolve into chaos, al-Qaeda would move back into its hideouts and have access to oil revenues, which would foment violence and harm the world's economy.
For a historical context of President Bush's speech today, here is audio of President Bush's speech from the beginning of the war, five years ago.
President Bush's theme today was unequivocal: "We will fight the enemy whereever it makes its stand. We will stay on the offense."
Hearing the phrase "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in his speech made the last five years flash through my head. This morning, what do you think? Will you be protesting the war? Did you get teary when President Bush thanked the troops and a chill thinking of the great task our troops are facing? What should happen now?

Dries Van Noten
Maybe our economy is hurting because Liberals spend so much time protesting and not enough time working
1
cine. LMAO!!!
2Bush is completely delusional and clearly suffers from early onset Alzheimer's.
3Cine - They ARE working.... working to protect our civil liberties.... maybe you just don't like America or the Constution... the most patriotic thing you can do is protest!
Speaking of which, what the heck ever happened to that crazy cindy sheehan?
4
Oh man, I have a feeling this thread could get hot. Time to get my Fred Thompson fan......
5Cabaker didn't she say she was done with protesting as she was disillusioned by everything and her original mission had been distorted or something like that.
6Cabaker, last I heard cindy sheehan said she was retiring because she ran out of money or something.
7is that what happened to her? hmm... oh well, i hope she finally got the help she needed.
8ah, good ole sheehan, best picture EVER of her - http://amadeo.blog.com/repository/99312/612268.jpg
9I'm still mad at the timing of starting this war. The President started it two days before my 21st birthday and sent away my over 21 friends so I only got to celebrate with my boyfriend at the time who ruined it. Seriously, he couldn't have waited a couple days?
In all seriousness though, I am so so greatful that everyone I know who has gone over there has come back. And despite all the negativity, there has been some improvement. I do think we need to stay and not cut funding for the effort and especially the soldiers. Cutting and running now would be extremely disastrous.
10m2!
11I felt sorry for her but her child was not forced into the military, he chose to join knowing full well that if there was ever a conflict he might be called up to fight.
12M2 you think two days is bad. Today IS my birthday! Sorry to steal your thunder!
13Oh happy birthday cine!!!
14Thanks Nyara!

39i know finally! whose idea was it to add that extra "na"?? who makes up these things??
40oooh no cabaker lol, I think Jake is mucho feo, blech I don't see what women love about him.
41This morning, what do you think? That I despise our President and wish that he'd never been "elected".
Will you be protesting the war? Always have, always will.
Did you get teary when President Bush thanked the troops, and a chill thinking of the great task our troops are facing? No. Because if he was sincere, he'd be standing in Iraq delivering that speech. He wouldn't be making remarks about how it would be "romantic" to be on the front lines (he didn't say it in this particular speech, but in another). Personally, I think Bush needs shot.
What should happen now? Now that we're in Iraq, pulling out would be a disaster, just like it was during Desert Storm. However, I think it is time we started to worry about our own country's decline and start steadily removing troops from Iraq and slowly cutting funding over time. I think there needs to be a time table for getting the hell out of dodge.
42nyara, I never got what women see in Jake, until I met him. He is by far the best looking person I have ever met, and that is male and female (besides my fiance of course).
43See, Cabaker! I sensed that you loved cake - hence the confusion.
Happy Birthday, Cine!
44Thanks Piper. I feel like I have not seen you in forever
45Really cine?? Maybe he's just not photogenic or cameragenic lol. I have looked and I just can't find it but then again I totally perv over Seth Rogen....

49I never thought Jake was hot til I saw him in Brokeback - go figure! That is one of the best movies I have ever seen. He is too too hot!
