In an announcement moments ago in New York City, Eliot Spitzer resigned saying, "In the past few days I've begun to atone for my private failings," adding, "from those to who much is given, much is expected." He continued, "I sincerely apologize . . . I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the public's work," concluding, "I am resigning the office of governor . . . effective Monday, March 17. . . thank the public once again for the privilege of service."
In the two days since the story of Spitzer's connection to a prostitution ring broke, details have emerged that suggest, according to law enforcement officials, that Spitzer had spent tens of thousands of dollars on the call-girl service Emperors Club VIP, some putting the figure as high as $80,000.
David Paterson, New York's Lieutenant Governor, will take over. He is legally blind and will be New York State's first African-American governor. When asked for lessons these characteristics had taught him, Paterson replied, "You never get to any level of leadership where your race is not a factor. You don't want to be the first; you want to be the first of many."

At least with a Democrat taking over things will be scandal-free.
1Spitzer is a Democrat, as well.
2Am i the only one who thinks he has evil eyes.
3Why do people seem to be having trouble getting that he is a DEMOCRAT!!! I love a good Republican scandal as much as the next person, but lets keep our facts straight here.
4Eh, Rac just does that hoping that people won't read the story and think he's a Republican... he's been corrected 3 times, he knows what he's doing... whatever.
At least Spitzer said "sorry" this time instead of just saying "i apoligize"!
5Good news!
6this is the difference between republicans and democrats. both f*ck around, but democrats just tend to get caught more often.
7oh and i think eliot spitzer is greasy in every meaning of the word.
8Bye!
9I feel so sad for his wife...
10I'm getting a tan from the reflective light coming from his forehead.
11raciccarone is a jokester! Calm down everyone, it was a joke.
Haven't you noticed their sassy posts on other threads?
12I get that he's a jokester, I just don't find it particularly funny.
13
Piper and Racci!
14I know this will probably eventually come down to a "my party affiliation is better than your party affiliation" discussion, but I think it is for the best that Spitzer step down. I think it would have been slightly different if it were an affair, but he was participating in ILLEGAL activities, which makes the entire thing a whole new ball game.
15totally agree with tiabia.
it's funny how many men think they can get away with this kind of stuff in positions of power (seuxal or non-sexual), so i'm always happy when they do get caught and held accountable for what he's done.
i feel reallllly bad his family right now. the humiliation. ouch.
16*for
17I can't figure out WHY Spitzer did this. Anyone have a guess? Blinded by the power?
18I do love seeing hypocrisy get taken down.
Liberty--my guess would be weakness combined with "blinded by the power," like you said--he probably just thought he would never get caught.
Oh, man. Don't set yourself up as a crusader for the law, then get caught red-handed doing something like this!
19I will be honest I haven't followed the story and this is the first I've read about it. One question: did he use public money to pay for this? If not, then who cares. Yes I know prostitution is illegal but he didn't kill anyone.
20How can his wife stand beside him? What a pig for humiliating his wife and kids.
21Liberty it says that the girl was told he would do things to her that seemed"dangerous" meaning that he has a kinky side clearly and maybe his wife wasn't into that, but money and power also play into this. My mom always says when a man gets rich or powerful it's over, money is an aphrodisiac.
22Ah, okay...I didn't realize all the Democrat comments were coming from the same person.
There are a lot of men in power who do things that don't make sense. They get the power, the attention, and it goes to their heads I guess. I'm sure there are plenty of psychological reasons for their behavior. Combined with their positions of power, it probably gets more out of hand for them than the average person. Lucky them getting to work through their issues in the spotlight!
23Nya, you are not the only one. He DOES look evil. I thought that the first time I saw his face. Something about the eyes, and the shape of his head. Like two horns would fit perfectly just above his temples.
24I think he did it for the same reason Hollywood stars fall apart. They have so much, so fast and so soon, they lose track of who their real friends are, if any, and nothing is meaningful anymore. So they indulge in unhealthy or illegal things to find their next high, or even a purpose in life.
25If my husband did that to me and "our" life in such a public eye, I would feel no allegiance to stand by his side during this time. I wasn't his wife, I was his facade.
26His term in office has been so riddled with conflict. Nothing was really going to get accomplished with him in office. It does not matter that he didn't kill somebody, he broke the law. a very clear law. As someone who lives in New York I wouldn't be happy if he didn't resign. I think his wife is just going through the motions right now. I hope she divorces him soon. 80,000 dollars!!!
27He did it because he thought he was going to get away with it... From what Ive heard about him, he was an egomaniac with a holier than thou attitude.
I understand that his wife is going through the motions... but wouldnt it be amazing if just ONCE you saw some sleazy politicians clothes being thrown out of a window????
28I can't figure out WHY Spitzer did this. Anyone have a guess? Blinded by the power?
29**************************
Hey Liberty, he's a politician. Is there really a reason to ask?
For 83$ a minute.. as ive heard, the cars better be washed and waxed, the lawn better be mowed, i want my house clean and i want dinner on the table!
All politicians are scum regardless of party. They all lie at some
point or another and all use manipulation to get what they want from the public.
30Another dirty dog bites the dust.
31So glad he resigned. Total hypocrisy. I feel for his wife and three daughters. How do you face three teenagers after all of that? I'd need therapy after that one just to start believing again that men who you put faith in and commit to can actually be faithful and truthful back!
32I just can't believe he brought in a girl from Staten Island!! Hey, we have pretty prostitutes here in DC, ya know!
j/k, I'm glad he got busted. I do feel bad for his wife and family, but I think he did the right thing by resigning.
33I'm in the minority here.
Basically, I view this as a private issue in his personal life. Why does he have to resign his job over this? Many people have affairs, and they don't have to resign their jobs because of it.
Personally, I don't approve of what he did, but I separate between personal life and professional life.
34Glowingmoon, I would be with you if he had a "regular" affair, but since he broke a pretty serious law (not as serious as murder obviously, but not something like getting a speeding ticket), I don't think he's fit to hold public office.
35He broke laws here and this is no longer private. He is such a hypocrite- he has busted prostitution rings in NY before and was still stupid enough to let him self fall like this. He knows all about monitoring banks and suspicious transfers and transactions BUT he still put up red flags with his transfers/withdrawals form various accounts so he could get the cash to pay for these hookers.
36You're right, he did break a law. Plus, with the hypocritical humiliation, I could see why he would want to resign. That's a lot of heat.
37I do see where you're coming from with personal lives of politicians staying personal, though.
38Unfortunately, politicians can't expect much to be kept private-regardless of breaking laws or whatever. Same thing with celebrities. I do think some things should be off-limits to the public, but if you get into politics or celebrity spotlight these days, you should honestly realize you are going to scrutinized. In his case, he was known for being a hard-a$$ Attorney General, so he should be held to the very same standards that he expected of others.
39I agree with you Marcella, why is it that dems seem to get caught more often?
40bokc - all the wiretaps republicans have on them
41"I agree with you Marcella, why is it that dems seem to get caught more often?"
They don't. Remember Ken Foley, Philip Giordano, Neal Horsley, Bob Packwood, Larry Craig, Ted Haggard, Bob Allen, Glen Murphey.... Just to name a few. In fact, Bob Allen and Larry Craig were caught soliciting undercover police officers in public restrooms. They thought they were soliciting male prostitutes. So gosh - why didn't the GOP demand that they step down immediately or be impeached? Why did we not get news coverage on all the channels of Mrs. Craig's humiliation?
