An unauthorized cellphone video of the American President-turned-American Idol has leaked on the Internet. Last weekend at the Gridiron, an annual roast attended by political journalists, President Bush sang a lighthearted ode to his time in the White House. His serenade was met with chuckles, applause, and a standing ovation.
I'm a little confused why the country's best journalists find the inept response to Hurricane Katrina, obstruction of justice by a top administration aide, and other Bush highlights, so absolutely side-splitting.
Now that the Bush Presidency is in its twilight, are you prepared to laugh at a musical recitation of its many scandals and crises sung by the President himself? To see the lyrics, read more.
Lyrics:
Yes you're all gonna miss me, The way you used to quiz me, But soon I'll touch the brown, brown grass of home.
I spent my days clearing brush
I clear my head of all the fuss
But the fuss you made over Harriet and Brownie
Down the lane I look and here comes Scooter
Finally free of the prosecutor
Chorus
And then I wait and look around me
At the oval walls that surround me
I realize I was only dreaming
For there's Condi and Dick, my old compadre,
Talking to me about some oil rich Saudi,
But soon I'll touch the brown brown grass of home.
Chorus
That old White house is behind me,
I am once again carefree,
Don't have to worry 'bout a crisis in Pyongyang.
Down the lane I look, Dick Cheney is strolling
With documents he'd been withholding,
It's good to touch the brown brown grass of home.

Now that was funny. A great parody of a great song. Did not know the President could even carry a tune. Giv e the man his due.
1that was good
2He's been made fun of pretty much from the start of his presidency and a lot of people have laughed at his expense. I think its great that he can show that he took all of that in stride. I'm not offended in the least.
3Well for 8 years we have seen him make an ass out of himself so what's new. I agree I dont see the comedy at all.
4You know for everyone who slams him, I dare them to try to do a better job. You have no idea what this man faces, you have no idea what intel he is receiving from his advisors, and most of us probably don't understand the protocol or real politics involved at that level since last I checked, most of us haven't been the President of the United States.
He has had to deal with the biggest challenges this country has faced in over 50 years. I doubt Clinton or anyone else would have done a better job...
To quote 3M, you're damed if you do, you're damed if you don't.
5Sorry for my rant, I just get so sick of the childish slams people give to him. Is he is the best president ever? No. Did he make mistakes? Yes. But we should have some respect for the office he holds and that fact that over half the country voted for him.
6I don't like Bush one bit, but I didn't think this was too inappropriate. I didn't hear him making light of Katrina; and I don't mind him having a little fun with all his other foibles. He wasn't joking about anyone who actually was harmed.
7I think it's hysterical! He should go to the families who've lost family and friends needlessly in Katrina because of his singular incompetence and then do a musical act! Truly someone you can have a beer with! Greatest President EVER!
8Bush doesn't drink anymore, Rac. Bummer, right? But I do agree he would be fun to hang out with! Love your observations, so enlightening!
9This was just a little scary. Hearing him recount his own errors while laughing... I'm not sure how to feel about it.
10It's obvious he's just trying to make light of the situation, I'm not terribly offended.
This event took place on Monday night, my husband and I were driving past the Renaissance Hotel from my dentist appt. to our apartment in Chinatown, when police pulled up and blocked all streets around the hotel for about 10 minutes. There was such coordination, we knew it was The W himself. A million black SUVs, men in suits with earpieces, etc. I didn't mind waiting because it was a fun spectacle!
11**my bad it was Saturday night, we were coming from Baltimore...I kept thinking my dentist appt wasn't that late.
12yea really dc! who has dentist appts on saturday night?? hope your dentist is a hottie
13It makes me sick to my stomach that he can simply laugh it all off, especially the part about Cheney withholding documents. Seriously, the man is a disgrace. I hope he rots in the fiery pits of...
14Oh jeez, people...SNL makes fun of crap every week, as do Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
Freaking lighten up and have a laugh.
15One more thing. You can thank Louisiana ex-Governor Kathleen Blanco for the INEPT response to the levee situation in New Orleans. Bush tried to send in the National Guard, but he needed her permission first. She didn't grant it until too late.
Get your facts straight.
16i think they're laughing liberty 'cause it's funny?
17Liberal: WAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!! Why is this so funny? *Sob*
Hey libs, you really aren't doing yourselves any favors by whining at every opportune moment.
Chill. Have a cigar. Hehe.
18"He should go to the families who've lost family and friends needlessly in Katrina because of his singular incompetence"
I don't want to bash you, because we are all entitled to our opinions, but I gotta say that the President does not act singularly on anything. What Cabaker says is true, the President is fed information, his advisors help him make decisions, and there is a whole different realm of things that go on in this world that you and I know nothing about. We only know what we are told by the media - and that has been filtered and hand selected.
I am glad to see that this man hasn't lost his sense of humor after 8 years of being bashed. Dude, it is funny.
19"But we should have some respect for the office he holds"
Shouldn't he have some respect for the office he holds? Just wondering.
"and that fact that over half the country voted for him."
Untrue. Over half the country doesn't even vote.
20Bravo, Bravo!! I loved it, he's great!

Exactly right designgirl... makes you wonder about the possibilities of a woman president??????? kinda scary
22It's Gridiron. It's been going on every year since 1885. It's the one time during the year when the press and politicians - GOPers and Dems - can get together and be goofy without politics. It's supposed to be entirely off the record.
23What a Jackass! This so called joke does nothing but describe his whole presidency!
Sincerely,
Nothing nice to say about Bush
24Here's a little sample of a Chris Rock interview that says it all:
Interviewer (re: Barack Obama's candidacy): "Do you think America is ready for a black President?"
Chris Rock: "Well, America was ready for a retarded President."
ENOUGH SAID.
25And I really like what Piper23 said, he took what everyone else said in stride, he moved right along. Ahh-the spirit of a Texan. Nice!
26The reality is something that most people in America will never truly know. The media filters EVERYTHING we see and hear. Katrina, the economy, the war ... everything is altered by the time we get it.
27I can't imagine what would have happened on 9/11 if Gore had won the Presidency. I'm sure he would claim he invented terrorism, invented airplanes and invented the World Trade Center.
Our President has been in office in one of the toughest times in US history, and while he has made mistakes, I defy anyone to say they haven't made mistakes, as well. I only know of one person in history who lived an error free life, so get some real perspective. We all laugh at Leno, Stewart, Connan, Letterman and all the other policial comedians, why can't we laugh at his own jokes?
Who wrote the lyrics for him? He's not clever enough to have done it himself!
28The hold up in Louisiana was the Governor and the Mayor of NO. The feds could have done some things better but when it gets to the bottom line the state was being run by a person who during the flooding of New Orleans sat in a wing back chair in the state police headquarters crying. She wouldn't give the federal government the power to come in because SHE wanted to be in control of the Federal Troops! That is the facts and just the facts.
29Wow, what an arrogant guy. He believes he cannot be touched. Destroy what once was the greatest country on earth and now laughs about it. Unbelieveable, totally unbeliveable.
30Hey cabaker27, like the avatar, but your comment about your president, and that "over half the country voted for him."
31Um, you remember the year 2000?? LESS than half the country voted for him, you recall that little "footnote" in history?
As long as New Orleans has come up, lets not forget that jerk of a mayor who disappeared down a rat hole at the first sign of trouble, and only popped his peanut head up every 3 days or so to cast blame on someone else. Katrina was NOT Bush's fault. Blame FEMA, blame the Gov, Mayor, City planners who built a city in a sinkhole, but don't blame the prez just because you don't like his politics.
32"you have no idea what intel he is receiving from his advisors"
Neither does Bush.
"probably don't understand the protocol or real politics involved at that level"
Neither does Bush.
"most of us haven't been the President of the United States."
Neither has Bush.
Next?
33To CABAKER27: Do you really think that over half of the country voted for that man? If you think that then I feel sorry for you. He won the election because there are certain people who sought to it. Get off the mainstream media diet. My dog would have done a better job because she would make decisions based on loyalty to this country, not based on putting money in special interests' pockets. He is the exact opposite of Robin Hood, he steals from the poor and gives to the rich. I think the song is rediculous and those who are saying to lighten up, you should be ashamed. It would be funny if he made fun of the goofy speeches and moments, but to mock the way he and the devil dick cheney snubbed their noses at the legal system is obsurd. He just slapped every American in the face and you all just laugh and say lighten up. How about I fire you from your job, send your husband/wife, son/daughter half way around the world only to come back in a casket, take your home away, trample all over the constitution, and call you up a year or so later and sing you a song about it? Are you really going to laugh? Yall make me sick. Stop eating what the media gives you and find out the real facts. What a disappointment some of you are. It just kills my hopes that this country can be turned around knowing that there are people who think this is funny. THE MAN SOLD OUT YOUR COUNTRY, DONT YOU GET IT!!
34After all this president has been through, it certainly shows a tremendous amount of inner strength. I admire the guy for not crumbling under the pressure of the "popular vote" and still having a sense of humor in the end. It speaks volumes of his character and faith. Speaking of "popular vote", I'm not sure I would want someone in the oval office who was continually swayed to and fro by the voices of so many. Popularity isn't a qualification for the presidency. Good on you President Bush!
35"It's a joke son, a gag."
- Foghorn Leghorn
It's fun to watch you rookies get your knickers in a twist over something that's been a Washington tradition for more than 130 years. Seems Bush Derangement Syndrome is pretty prevalent here.
36hey j boogie, you forgot about the ozone layer that G Dub personally depleted. I suggest you get off the media train. The prez (and I mean the office, not the man)is not capable of doing everything you claim.
37MyNameIsBob.....right on
38Stop blaming local and state officials for the failures of the Bush Administration.
"But there's a problem with the White House's excuse: It's patently false. As Josh Marshall points out, Blanco declared a state of emergency on Aug. 26 -- a day before Bush declared a federal emergency in Louisiana. (You can see Blanco's official declaration in PDF format here; the Washington Post has corrected its article.) On Aug. 28 -- the day before Katrina made landfall -- Blanco followed her declaration with an official letter (PDF) to Bush that requested all manner of emergency supplies her state would need for the aftermath."

39Thanks, kpj. Signing off for happy hour in Chinatown.
40J Boogie - "...Yall make me sick. Stop eating what the media gives you and find out the real facts. What a disappointment some of you are. It just kills my hopes that this country can be turned around knowing that there are people who think this is funny. THE MAN SOLD OUT YOUR COUNTRY, DONT YOU GET IT!!"
Stop eating what the media gives you?! Ummm, hello, McFly, I believe that this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black...
41As usual, people don't get the obvious. He's talking to the Press. He's referring to issues that they reamed him on (the list could have gone on and on and on since liberals like to blame him for every single thing in the universe.) He was making light of the press not having the stories any more when he's gone. Nothing wrong with having a laugh about the press, at a private dinner.
I'm so tired of the Katrina reference - someone even said Bush was "Solely" responsible for a hurricane and the damage. You've got to be kidding. Besides nature, the man most responsible is the MAYOR of New Orleans! And then the governor. Then the feds have some responsibility but the feds are not in charge of state's responsibility!! You'd scream if they were ! You want it both ways.
That's why he's singing the song that they'll missing having a scapegoat.
42So by sheer fact that jammer05 called the Governor inept and then said that her ineptness makes her worry that we aren't ready for a woman president. That is insane. How many white men in power have committed all kinds of terrible acts, (this is a list i can make, that will take days and days to write) would you say we aren't ready for a white male to be in office? I doubt it. With that kind of logic it makes me worry for Americans.
I think that it's sucky that the president can make light of all his follies as president because it doesn't effect him. The fact that he can laugh at his mistakes, mistakes that cost billions of dollars and lots of lost lives just kind of shows a large amount of insensitivity. I am keeping hope alive for Obama to win the nomination. I believe that he can heal the country.
Also, Yeah we laugh at comedians making fun of them, but when it comes down to it, what they say doesn't have an impact on my future, they aren't in charge of anything.
Oh, and lots of things are "American Traditions" (racism, sexism, facism) it doesn't mean that they are funny Bob.
43Those of you that have made a point of suggesting that Bush has in any way not been a tragedy of a president are listening to people like Rush Limbaugh too much.
Someone commented, "is he the best president ever? no". No, it's true he isn't the best, but I think it's fair to say he very well may have been the worst U.S. president in history. Let's recap very quickly:
Was put into office without actually winning the election.
Lied about the need to start a war with Iraq (lied over 700 times according to the Washington Post)
Took the country from it's largest surplus to it's largest deficit.
Hundreds of thousands of lives lost for no reason other than he wanted to go into Iraq.
Bin Laden not caught
Over a trillion dollars misplaced in Iraq war effort
Has broken numerous laws and constitutional rights, such as the 4th amendment and FISA by illegally wire tapping
Used fearmongering to divide the country
Oil prices at all time high
Housing market at lowest point in 20 years (National Association of Realtors) - except for homes OVER $700K which are at an all-time high.
Our country is NOT safer
And as for the comment about respecting the office of the presidency - wow. I'll respect it as soon as this administration does - or after they get the hell out.
Give him a break? People, you're not paying attention.
44To CABAKER27,
I really do admire your attempts at fairness and compassion. I can see that you are attempting to treat others, in this case, George W. Bush, as you yourself would hope to be treated. There are, however, a few problems with your application of it in this instance.
1) Presidents are not supposed to be average Joes and Jills, they're supposed to be exceptional precisely because the job is as complex and critical as it is. Therefore, I'm disinclined to let the measure of whether or not a president has done a good job in office be whether or not you or I could do the job better. I tend to think I could do it better than Bush, but I don't know, so I don't run, and I wish he hadn't either.
2) Yes, he's been president during one of the most difficult times in our country, a substantial degree of which he himself created and much of which he did little to alleviate.
3) Other presidents have triumphed in hard times in our country, including Abraham Lincoln and Franklin. D Roosevelt.
4) I think a person has to really be sort of obtuse not to realize how bad Bush has been when they had Bill Clinton immediately preceding him. Keeping your mind out of Mr. Clinton's pants, by any measure, he was the best president of my lifetime. I'm 40.
I really do hope you can see this.

45In 2004 Bush won both electoral college and the popular vote, therefore over half of the country. Get YOUR facts straight.
The fact is that no one liked Lincoln when he was president but we all seem to like him now! I wonder what his approval ratings would have been in the middle of the civil war with 600,000 people dead... yes history looks back on him pretty fondly. We won't know for at least 50 years what to make of Bush's presidency. So you can complain, name call, and feed information you get from Micheal Moore or moveon.org as much as you want, but don't expect anyone to take you seriously.
46i think that many of you make great points, and i think that the article does an unfair job of describing bush, especially within the context of what the song is actually about. but i also think we are all forgetting one thing- one very important thing, on both sides of the argument.
47Bush is still a person, he is still a man, and honestly who among us could have lived under the pressures he deals with every day without giving in to the pressure to drink, or cheat, or become involved in a porn video. far greater and lesser people have cracked under even less pressure than he has experienced pretty much every day for the last eight years. and believe it or not, bush does not make all his decisions on his own, but he does have to take the wrap for them, he has to live with the consequences and the name bashing from the press alone (with the exception of dick cheney sometimes).
And now bush is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. hes probably not happy about it but he is pretty much just a lame duck right now in office and that weight is beginning to be lifted off his shoulders and placed instead upon hilary obama and mccain. can you immaging what it would be like to suddenly have a huge portion of that pressure taken off your chest after such a long time? i cant, but i know that if it was me, i would be singing and dancing and laughing too because its over. there is no going back, bush cant change the mistakes he made, or the mistakes the public made in how it interpreted him, but we can all learn from it, and in those moment when he believes he is alone among peers (yea, where's our criticism for the jerk who whipped out the cell and recorded the poor prez?), i say go ahead and sing mr. prez, cuz hes earned at least that righ
Why would Clinton be the best president? Because nothing happened under his watch? My barometer of a "good" president is a little higher than that. I'd rather have someone actually get things done and maybe fail sometimes, than someone who does nothing, then sits back and plays armchair quarterback when the next administration has to deal with the problems left behind.
48The scariest thing is that after 8 years of this, there are still people like cabaker27 who aren't irate about what this administration has done. I could care less about the man singing.
Comparing bush to Abraham Lincoln is like comparing a retarded child to William Shakespeare when it comes to writing literature.
And saying that he 'won' the 2004 election shows again that you don't get it.
Thank GOD that it's the last year!!!!
49CABAKER, no one liked Lincoln when he was president? Or no one in the south liked Lincoln when he was president?
President Lincoln spoke some of the most articulate, poetic, inspiring words in the history of our nation. Nobody will ever say that about George Bush. About the only thing I can think of that the two have in common besides party affiliation is that they both spoke of freedom of a people when in reality, they had a primary objective that had nothing to do with that. In Lincoln's case, his real priority was to preserve the union. In Bush's case, we still don't know exactly what he was after in Iraq though there is well-documented speculation. One thing is for sure, Iraqi freedom had nothing to do with it. If it did, Bush would be at war in the various African nations where people are being murdered in civil wars every day.
You cannot reasonably compare Bush to Lincoln. You can compare him to Nixon, and frankly, I think Nixon might come out better in the contest. That depends on what W does with the rest of his days.
