New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is about to make an announcement regarding his admission to his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring. The announcement comes just one week after federal prosecutors arrested four people for connections to an expensive prostitution operation. No word as to whether the busted ring is that which the governor had been involved.
This connection is especially shocking given Spitzer's reputation as a tough-on-crime reformer and his nickname, "the Sheriff of Wall Street." For all breaking updates on this story, including the "Client 9" details, read more.
Update: Rumors are flying while we're waiting for Spitzer's announcement. Some are even saying that Spitzer is about to resign? Updates as we know them.
Update II: His statement was shockingly brief. He apologized, and said nothing about stepping down. He said that he had "violated his obligation to his family." Adding that he failed the standards he set for himself. He took no questions and said he needed time to rededicate himself to his family, and said he would "report back."
Update III: According to the Times the announcement was prompted by implications that Spitzer had been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month.
The wiretap recording captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a hotel room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9.
Update IV: Here are the "Client 9" documents with all of the details, including the name of the woman involved.
Update V: Apparently the political ramifications of this announcement are already spreading. Some are saying that Hillary's campaign website has already had mentions of Spitzer's name removed.
Update VI: The Times City Room has an extensive fact-filled, non-sensational, play-by-play of all of the events.
What do you think is going on here? Are you shocked or is it much ado about nothing? Just a couple of weeks ago we were talking about Spitzer's excitement about being a superdelegate on The Colbert Report. I wonder if that's still an option. . . .

Are politics an aphrodisiac??
1So, are the police men standing behind him there to protect him or arrest him?
2Hmmm...Someone told me the other day, Republicans are scum bags.
3Oh, and good luck on your interviews 3M! We will miss you this week!
4I think they are protecting him.
5Good Luck M3!
6Shop I love :pirate:
7Ah man it did not work!
8Cine, I thought only Republicans were involved in these sorts of things, too. I guess we were wrong all along.
93M- You're leaving us? Well, good luck on those interviews I know nothing about. Travel goes for those safely.
10Tres, he is going on his grad school interviews. I love Yoda!
11Yay! I was wondering when Pop was going to post smtg about this. My boss just ran in about an hour ago and mentioned this.
12Hey Cine!
It's : YAAR :
13
Thanks Shop
back at ya!
14When will people realize that saying "I apologize" is not the same as saying "I'm sorry"?
And I hope his wife shakes him down for all he's worth... Maybe she could call McGreevy's wife and they can start a club...
15Ooh cabaker, you hit on one of my absolute favorites. I majored in Political Communication with an emphasis on Aplogia--the science of the apology. There's a whole list of different ways to handle situations like this, but yes--"I'd like to apologize" is not the same as "I'm sorry." Soo fascinating
16Cabaker and Citizen I never even thought of that!
17Yea, I know its a politico spin and I get that... but he could have at least said "I'm sorry" to his wife! she deserves that at least!
18Things like this make me realize how happy I am to not live in NY anymore. I grew up in upstate and it is so sad to see a state run entirely by NYC. The politicians and values held by them in no way reflect the makeup of the entire state... basically, if you live north of White Plains, you are ignored.
19What is with republicans and prostitutes?
20Raciccarone, Spitzer is a Democrat.
21Did you hear this chick charged 5000 bucks for 1 "encounter"??
my hubby says to me "for that you should get laid, get your taxes done, and get your tires rotated!"
22BTW, 20 bucks says "Client #9" is the title of the hooker's upcoming book... cuz you know she's gonna get a book deal out of this!
23Cabaker, Long Island is pretty much ignored too. They are actually predominately Republican. Or at least they used to be.
24Bye bye Spitzer. Don't the door hit you on the way out.
25oh man, what was he thinking? i'm glad i'm not a man if for no other reason than i wouldn't want my life ruled by my crotch. hope that was a good piece of ass bedcause he sure is going to be paying for it for a loooooong time.
265 000 for sex?? That's my tuition for a semester dagnabit!!!!
27I don't understand how the NY Governor being accused of involvement in a prostitution ring eans that the rest of NY is ignored. I'm pretty sure that the majority of Democrats and the majority of NYC residents would not condone such behavior. Just because you are liberal doesn't mean that you condone criminal activity...
28Dadd - I wasn't saying that at all. I was just venting about the state of NY politics in general.
29Ugh makes me sick! I typed a whole big schpeil and then my laptop puked on me. Moral of this story, he is a scumbag.
This is an absolute disgrace. No matter the extent of his involvement he should be ashamed.
Having done a ton of research on the global sex trade recently, this particular incident reminds me that the government agencies and officials are not always what they seem. A good majority of prostitution rings serve those who are in power. Where there is power there is money.
Sickening ..bleh
30And 5000 woowee that must of been some .... I wont go there.
31As the one republic song goes,"it's too late to apologize", my question is how do their wives stand by them and bear teh public humiliation especially since now it's come out he's into not so safe games?
32WOW!!!!
33I hope it was some great sex for $5k.
But no seriously, I don't think apologizing will do much good now. What's done has been done.
I was watching his wife standing next to him, and just looking at the bags under her eyes. Kinda sad.
34Well...I just happen to work at the NYS Legislature, so I thought it would be fun to throw my two cents in here. Let me just say, work was INSANE today...Also, rumor is he's going to resign momentarily!
First, the fact that the Governor, a former Attorney General, would be so foolish as to use his personal cell phone to arrange to have a prostitute cross state lines (Violation of the Mann Act=Felony) is just insane. Also, he was involved in prostitution ring busts a few years ago when he was AG, which is pretty funny.
As to NY politics...there are plenty of Long Island Assemblymembers who are democrats, so LI is hardly underrepresented in the Assembly. As to the upstate/downstate dyanimc, I wouldn't really say that upstate is ignored per se. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica are all represented by very senior legislators with a fair amount of clout, and they very strongly support the upstate cause. A few of the more rural areas may be underrepresented only if their legislators are Republican, and thereby a minority member in the House (the Democrats have a veto-proof majority).
35Why do these wives stand next to their husbands? You couldnt catch me in the same zipcode with mine if he did that to me!!! At least not without a weapon I was about to use on him.
