Oprah is keen on a woman politician not named Hillary Clinton. The latest issue of O magazine features Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius in a piece about the virtues of female executive know-how. Governor Sebelius, an Obama supporter, gave this year's Democratic response after Bush's State of the Union.
Today the New York Times explored Oprah's apparent pick for first female president, along with some other likely candidates. The short list also includes Janet Napolitano, the Democratic governor of Arizona, and Condoleezza Rice.
The article explains that Sebelius and Napolitano have Clinton's ambitious appeal without all the baggage. It goes on to praise Napolitano for having bypassed "any of the old-fashioned ways of gaining political prominence: on the coattails of a doting daddy (see Susan Molinari), a dead husband (see Mary Bono), or a politically dead husband (see Elizabeth Dole)."
Do you think Hillary Clinton, with her connections and name recognition, is the female gender's best shot at capturing the White House? Or, are we just beginning to tap a generous supply of able female leaders?

Condeleeza Rce, sorry but i'm gonna have to say no!!!!!!
1Hillary cannot be our gender's best shot. It's not like women are only getting one shot at this. I imagine she'll help to open the floodgates for other candidates, even if she doesn't end up as the president.
2Why "no!!!!!!" on Condi?
3I think there are a lot of brilliant women out there.
I was watching a documentary about Hillary's life this weekend, and her first offical "real world" job was being a part of the Nixon impeachment trials. The sad thing is that they called Bill Clinton first, and he declined and said "you should look at my girlfriend Hillary". I think it says a lot that for all of her "35 years of experience" she has needed a man to be there with her for all of her accomplishments. Sad, really. IMO, she could have gone just as far on her own with out having to put up with a man who was cheating on her before they even got married.
I think there are many women who are intellegent enough on their own to run our country. I look forward to hearing more about them!
4My personal opinion: I think Condi would be a GREAT President.
5Shop: I've had a discussion or two on her and would be very interested by it, thus, I was wondering why someone would shout no.
(I understand not everyone agrees with me, but I was wondering why on the no.)
I think she'll wait for the current admin to leave so she can distance herself a little before making any sort of move like that.
6Why no to Condi? Because she is a Republican?
7What? She didnt pick Ann Coulter? That had to be an oversight
8History tells me that people only pay attention to women if they have a high profile name, but I sure hope that's not true in this case. I guess we'll see.
9I just think she (Condi) is a strong female who doesn't take crap from anybody. I agree w/ alot of her views and I look up to her. I can say much more on here but 1) I'm too lazy lol and 2) I'm leaving work right now.
Good point though M3! You should post a discussion about it
in Conservative Sugar!
10I would absolutely 100% vote for Condi Rice as our Commander and Chief. She is the greatest role model for young women that I can think of.
11Yes but piper she is a Republican. That negates all her accomplishments.
12Dern! Totally didn't know that! She's a waste of space! What was I thinking??!!!
13LMAO @ Piper-you're too funny.
14No to Condi cos I think she's a cold biatch that's why the way people feel about Hillary is the way I feel about Condeleeza. As far as I'm concerned it's not to do with a her being a republican(for once) I just don't like her, she gives me the heebie jeebies.
15I think Oprah's on the right track. She shouldn't be bowing to feminist pressure when voting for the person who's supposed to be running our country for the next four years. It's extremely hard to get those people out once they get in there! I agree that there are a slew of self-made, qualified female politicians that would make a much better first female president than Mrs. Clinton, hands down! It's good to see them getting press and support. I don't think Hillary would be the pinnacle of female presidents and I don't enjoy her nationally representing my gender...
16I didn't know about the heebie jeebies, that changes everything.
17I think Hillary is opening doors since she is a viable female candidate. I don't think it is now or never for the ladies - and I do think there are amazing women that will be running in the (near) future. I very much respect Napalitano (my gov)for showing strength in her leadership and avoiding the divisive baggage of Clinton - if she's hated here it is for her politics and not her character or just for being a woman. And love that she's 'bypassed' all of those man-centric ways of coming up and into her position like you mention.
Does anyone know anything about Kathleen Sebelius? All I know is she was REALLY flatline in her response to Bush’s State of the Union. (the clip here is Daily Show - I just knew it was there, and it is pretty easily searchable)

Condoleezza for President? It would take people the entire first term to learn to spell her first name!
I don't think this is a one shot deal. I'm just not 35 yet.
