In his press conference that just concluded, President Bush strongly criticized Democrats in the House for not putting the FISA bill to vote before recess. "I guess you could be relaxed about this if you didn't think there was a threat to the country." Slamming his hand on the podium, he said, "I know there's a threat to the country!"
Later he said, "how can you listen to the enemy if the phone companies won't participate with you?!" He then stressed that phone companies would not consent to participate without the protection from lawsuits that FISA would allow. Bush continued, "this an important issue for the American people to understand."

President Bush said with regard to the shifting scene of power in Russia, "President Putin's a straightforward, pretty tough character when it comes to his interests. Well so am I." He went on to stress the need to establish a relationship with the candidate who becomes the new leader of Russia on Sunday.
Helen Thomas was in the front row, wearing red, though she didn't get to ask any questions.

"How can I protect you with this 'constitution' you Americans are always going on and on about? I can't do my job unless we all agree to throw this worthless document away once and for all!"
1He has done more to erode our rights a way of life than any terrorists could imagine doing. There won't be much left to protect if people like him aren't stopped. There's a reason we a separation of powers!
2:roftl: raciccarone!
So...I'm not the only one who finds his statement a little ironic, am I?

4Fear tactics much? Funny there's always a convenient threat especially around election time.

How about, "by using the system that was in place long before your abomination of an administration was in place, using warrants and judicial oversight?"
> "this an important issue for the American people to understand."
Well, we agree on that. Probably not in the same way though.
6Bean, the government has been taping phones illegally for a long time, long before the Bush administration.
7Personally, I don't think Americans are scared enough.
8Putin is practically a dictator. Of course Bush likes him.
9It has been the policy for quite sometime that they can tap a phone, and then get the warrent 3 days later. The FISA bill simply allowed them to keep the people they tapped undocumented.
I saw a program where a former AT&T employee said that he connected the hardware to make a copy of ALL AT&T phone calls the for government. If this is true, it completely violates the 4th amendment, which protects a person's "effects" from unwarranted searches. If they have no reason to suspect YOU, they shouldn't be able to search YOU.
Also, there are SO MANY things that were recommended by the 9/11 Commission that would better protect America than wire tapping. Bush ignores all of those areas where real progress could be made.
10Bushy are safer now then we were before 911
11"President Putin's a straightforward, pretty tough character when it comes to his interests."
Sure he is, his main interest in to make any opposition to his goverment go away. If he has to kill Anna Politkóvskaya and Litvinenko, he does! I wish that what he's been doing in Chechnya would be more public, he's violating human rights every day.
12He's a lame duck. He keeps throwing his fist on the podium, but it's not going to help - no one takes what he is saying seriously anymore.
