Yesterday we reported on the speculation that Mitt Romney might be gathering up his army of sons and hopping back in the race.

Just when it seemed like the race was heading into its final shake out before the nomination, Ralph Nader, Michael Bloomberg, and Mitt-redux could make the playing field bumpy. Would you be happy to see Mitt back? If not Mitt, which dearly departed candidate deserves a re-do?

YES MITT!
1Wait can he do that?? Isn't the whole nomination proces almost over? How ca he even mount a challenge against McCain? I'm confused can someone explain to me how this is posible.
21st - When most candidates "drop-out," they tend to "suspend" their campaign rather than drop out as that way they can keep control of some of their delegates that they have won. This is helpful in possibly trying to push yourself as the VP. So, because he only "suspended" his race, he could re-enter if he possibly wanted to and would be able to keep the delegates he had previously won.
2nd - I don't know where this is coming from, but I highly doubt Romney will re-enter. The party, for the most part is willing to stand behind McCain. additionally, McCain is pretty close to the number of delegates he needs, so it would be a massive uphill battle that would do more to hurt the party than help, so once again, I doubt he would do this.
3rd - What I could see is this is just a publicity stunt to attempt to get McCain to pull Romeny into his court, thus eliminating this "re-entry." Though I highly doubt this would work.
4th - Bloomberg - This is an interesting situation. Bloomberg said he would run if the field of candidates was too wide (meaning the Democrats had someone very liberal and the Republicans had someone very Conservative.) With McCain pretty much taking the Republican (he's very moderate, not super Conservative) and with Nader in the middle of the road, you have the spectrum somewhat covered. Initially I counted Bloomberg out once Nader announced, but Nader's announcement may push Bloomberg in because he would actually stand a greater chance of winning with (including himself) four candidates in the race.
All in all, with Nader in and Bloomberg possibly running, I believe the White House is looking more and more red.
3Oh ok thanks mymellow but here is another question if it's an uphil battle for Mitt why is it such a big deal and all over the news if he doesn't realy have a snowball's chance in hell of even grabbing this from Mccain? It's probably just the media blowing it al out of proportion right? I was just like WTF?
4I would be so grateful if Mitt would get back into the race! He was the only Republican candidate worth a vote. McCain is starting to show just how big a liability he is.
5"It's probably just the media blowing it all out of proportion right? I was just like WTF?" - That is exactly how I feel about it!
"I would be so grateful if Mitt would get back into the race!" - At this point, I have to completely disagree. I do like Romney over McCain, but at this point him re-entering will do nothing to help the party, but will do much more to hurt our chances of winning the general election.
Look at the Democrats right now, I honestly I hope that Hillary and Obama continue to slug it out like they are because it is doing a lot of damage to their party on the whole. It seems the more it drags out, the more the supporters of one candidate stand more opposed to the other candidate. That will hurt them come the general election.
The Republicans do not fully have this issue right now, besides Huckabee who seems to be playing in the corner of the sandbox by himself. All Mitt's re-entry would do is to stir up trouble, which is also why I don't believe he has any intentions of re-entering.
I think he realizes that McCain is a one term President and that if he plays nice now he could position himself for the nomination in 2012.
6Amen 3M! Everything you said is TRUE! And I would def vote for Romney in 2012!
"The Republicans do not fully have this issue right now, besides Huckabee who seems to be playing in the corner of the sandbox by himself."
7If it were possible for him to re-enter, I'd say yes!
8"I think he realizes that McCain is a one term President and that if he plays nice now he could position himself for the nomination in 2012."
Interesting, that's what I've been wondering about!
9It seems like Romney is pretty popular and McCain is a polarising figure, I wonder what hurt him in the whole nomination process?
10I was thinking that too Nya! I was highly disappointed that he was losing.
113M my Dad actually said the same thing about McCain. He too believes that he will just be a ONE term President.
12I honestly thought that Mitt would be where McCain is right now and hillary would be where Obama is. How terribly wrong I was lol.
13Same here Nya!
14Mitt is a businessman who is very pragmatic. No way will he come back.
Makes for interesting converstaion though!
15Ive never though about McCain being a 1 or 2 term president... I haven't thought that far in advance.
What about him says 1 term to those who believe that?
To me, the difference between 1 and 2 terms is what happens during the first term. I dunno if you can sum it up just yet...
16
LOL! Honorable Heidi Klum.
17I agree cabaker. The future is pretty unpredictable. I wonder if people thought Bush would be a one term pres too.
18If Heidi Klum says it, I'm in. Seriously though - what makes him think he's got any more of a chance now that before? He was coming 3rd behind McCain AND Huckabee, and they're both still in the race. Plus, he has been doing zero campaigning in the interim. And didn't he endorse John McCain?
Just trying to get attention, that's what he's doing... but whatever, I fully approve of Republican in-fighting.
19I was under the impression that when Romney endorsed McCain, he released his delegates and encouraged them to vote for McCain. Wouldn't that have effectively taken his campaign from "suspended" to "terminated"?
20Go Romney!
21"What about him says 1 term to those who believe that?" - From what I recall, he has in the past never directly stated he would only seek one term, but he has come close to saying it and has implied it. For the most part, it is due to his age. He is already up there and I don't believe he has any intentions to push for more than one term.
This is why I want Fred Thompson as his VP. Thompson can take the VP for 4 years and then becomes the incumbent for the Presidential nominee in 2012. Woo hoo!
"I wonder if people thought Bush would be a one term pres too." - I doubt it. One I say McCain is a one term President, I men it in the sense that he will not seek out a second term in the office. There really was no reason to believe that Bush, Senior or GW, would only seek one term, which neither stopped at seeking.
"I was under the impression that when Romney endorsed McCain, he released his delegates and encouraged them to vote for McCain. Wouldn't that have effectively taken his campaign from "suspended" to "terminated"?" - As far as I know, he never "officially" changed his campaigned from suspended to terminated. While I agree with your points, I don't believe it is truly official until the paperwork is filed.
22I wish Romney would jump back in, but I don't think it would do him any good. He was the least objectionable of all the Republican candidates. If the Dems have to lose this election, I wouldn't be nearly upset if it was to him. Every time I see McCain I smell old man breath...
But hey, it's not an election year without a crazy media circus over every single little thing.
23I agree with MMM 100% on everything he said.
I love me some Fred!
24Fred is just as old though no?
25I don't see it happening.
It's too bad he left in the first place.
Mitt
26Why'd you have to go...
I miss you so...
Seems like its been forever since you've been gone...
LOL..
Fred is 65, McCain is 71.
So, if it played out the way I'd like, Fred would still be younger than Reagan by a year or 2, and still younger than McCain now, when he takes the White House in the next election.
27Cabaker, I think McCain is 5 years older then Fred. Personally their ages don't matter to me in the slightest. But no, Fred is no spring chicken either.
28Thanks for the explanation, mymellowman. I enjoy reading your comments very much because they are always well thought-out and informed without being inflammatory!
29kscincotta, don't let MMM fool you
30Yea M3 is TOTALLY inflammatory... haha!
Only 65! Geez those are 65 HARD years....
Im really interested to see who McCain is going to pick for VP. I wonder if this Mitt chatter is leaning more towards that...
31
Hoot and Cabaker!
32I don't know cabaker. But I am dying to find out. Who he chooses is going to make a HUGE difference. In my opinion, his choice in VP nomination could make or break the Republicans this year.
33I agree with you on that one, cine. Hiya, Hootie!
34Cine - I totally agree... who do you think he should pick? Besides Fred of course
.
35I see we've moved on from lollygaging to tom-foolery.
36You know it M3, who do you think McCain should pick?
37You know cabaker, it has to be someone very Conservative since he is so moderate. I don't know who though
What about you? Any suggestions? My father mentioned this Indian Governor from the south some where, but I must admit, I have not looked into him at all so I don't really know,
obviously, anything about him.
Tres, I would like to take a moment to honor us agreeing....
....Thank you.
38I love tom-foolery!!!! But lollygaging and shenanigans also warm my heart.
39cine:
40First and foremost, in case I haven't stated this before
I really believe Fred Thompson is
the ideal running mate:
1. He is very Conservative which McCain needs to balance his more moderate past.
2. Fred increased his name and image by running as a Presidential nominee, so he is recognizable.
3. He's strong in foreign affairs which will be very important in this election.
4. He is from the South, McCain will need help getting the southern vote which has mostly gone to Huckabee. Fred can get this.
5. Fred and McCain are friends. They get along, they know each other, how they work and can work together.
6. In the VP debates for the general election, I believe Fred will be able to whoop on any Democratic VP.
If we are to put Fred aside (please note I will not drop him out of the race, but I will "suspend" his nomination in the discussion of other possible nominees,) I believe it is a slightly harder pick.
1. Giuliani - I don't think he brings anything to the table besides "mayor of New York on 9/11" angle, which everyone seems to be sick of.
2. Huckabee - He has the south, but has come across, I believe, as "too" religious and he won't be picked up.
3. Romney - Great pick on the Economy angle, former Governor, is a dinstinct possibility, but my gut says he won't help gain any votes that would already be coming to McCain. (I say this because I believe many people who voted for Romney in the primaries will fall behind McCain because he's the nominee. i.e. I don't believe they will jump ship because he is not there.)
4. Ron Paul - His foreign policy stance knocks him out immediately.
5. The real additional list which, honestly, I do not know much about, but note that two on the list are from the South where McCain definitely needs support:
a. Governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty
41b. Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford
c. Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist
3M I hope he doesn't choose our governor Charlie Crist. I don't agree with him
42I do like Fred Thompson. Of course, I disagree with his political views, but there was a wonderful story on him in Playboy where he talked about his views on the role of government and it really resonated with me. Especially after the current President, it was refreshing.
43"In the VP debates for the general election, I believe Fred will be able to whoop on any Democratic VP."
MMM, Fred would bring out a can of whoop a**! It would be AWESOME!!!
44Man talking about Fred gets me all sorts of hyped up! I feel like an Obama supporter or something.
45Cine, I just got the Au H2O on your avatar (yeah, yeah a little slow here). That is hilarious! It's the small things like that make my day...
46Mariner, I don't think 80% of the people on this site get my avatar AT ALL. So I don't think you are slow.
47Haha Obama supporter! Too funny!
I don't think Mitt is a good choice, but I think Huck or Fred would be decent. He def. need someone more conservative. I think we all agree on that.
48Cine - At the risk of losing your friendship, I have to say... I have no idea what your avatar means.
Can you explain it to me? I'm blonde, don't hold it against me!
49When do we get to find out who his choice is anyway?
