DEARSUGAR and Grossed Out Gretta need your help. She has a smelly garbage disposal and wants to know how to fix the stink in her sink. I can't imagine what it must be like to live with that kind of a stench, ew! YumSugar, has quite a lot to say on this subject actually.
Check out a post she's written called, Disposal Do's and Dont's for tips on how to combat garbage disposal disasters. Does anybody have any other helpful tips on how to remedy this kind of icky invasive aura?

Dear Sugar
My garbage disposal smells really badly. Do you have any suggestions on how to either disinfect and how to prevent the smell from coming back again once it's gone? Grossed Out Gretta

like yum said throw part of a lemon down your disposal. I always did and it spelt great. Even though you have a garbage disposal and its suppose to grind up the little food bits you should probably scrape your plate into the trash first- the less food down the drain the less chance for the icky smell. Depending on how old your disposal is you may want to look into getting it replaced
1i do the lemon thing about once a week!
2Yum's instructions were dead helpful.
3I pour clorox in it to disinfect and let it run for a few seconds. I haven't tried the lemon thing.
4Try pouring a box of baking soda down the drain and leaving it for a half hour. Then dump about a litre of vinagar into the drain and leave it bubbling for about another 1/2 hour. Then pour a kettle of boiling water into the drain.
5Any citrus peel might help
6And Im not sure if its a do or dont but I always poor bleach in mine
7Vinegar works for me. And I've substituted oranges for lemons at least once a week.
8There are little detergent balls you can buy at the store specifically for the purpose of cleaning your garbage disposal. once i figure out the name of the brand i will post it.
9i swear by white vinegar! it's a great, natural cleanser. if my trash stinks, i'll just soak a paper towel in a bit of white vinegar and just throw it in there. works every time. and i do the lemon in the disposal as well, especially if i'm cooking with, like, half a lemon and the other half would just go in the trash. instead, down the disposal it goes.
10it might not be draining...i lived in an apt where my disposal wasn't draining all the nasty water and it started to grow and smell badly. i'd try vinegar or a lemon and if it doesn't work, i'd have a plumber look at it.
11Another trick with the lemon, lime, or any other citris peel. Rub peel on counter top right after wiping clean. I love that spell in my kitchen.
